The most influencing variable is time after stroke. Depending upon the condition and the patient’s ability to recover lost function, the following strategy can be used:
-Acute (including temporary/changeable impairments): emphasis placed on recovery of normal function
-Chronic (including permanent, unchanging impairments): emphasis placed on maximizing function through compensatory strategies.
According to Peter, considering the acuteness of impairment (2 weeks), the focus should be placed on recovery of normal function initially. Then, a re-evaluation of approach may be conducted in the future once his condition is less variable.
